Give us the two streets the lane runs between and the shop or building it sits behind. Fitzroy’s bluestone lanes rarely carry addresses that match the houses, so cross streets and a landmark work far better. If the lane is too narrow or blocked with bins, we park on the nearest street and walk in with the equipment, which is normal here.
The bike is inside my front gate, not on the street. Is that a problem?
Not at all. A lot of Fitzroy bikes are wheeled through the gate into a tiny front garden or along a side passage, and that suits us fine. We work in whatever space there is beside the bike rather than asking for it to come out to the kerb. Just be there to open the gate, and tell us on the phone what we are walking into.
The steering lock has jammed and the bars will not release. Can that be fixed on site?
Usually yes. A steering lock that refuses to release is normally a worn or dry mechanism rather than a dead bike, and it is repair work we do beside the bike. We free and service the mechanism where it can be saved, and replace the lock where it has worn past that. Do not force the bars in the meantime, because that turns a repair into a replacement.
I have lost both keys to a bike I ride every day. Is that recoverable?
Yes. Having no key left at all is the job we do most. We read the code out of the bike’s own lock, cut a working blade at the kerb and program the transponder if the model calls for one, so it starts before we leave. Nothing gets towed anywhere. Have registration papers and photo ID with you, because we confirm ownership on every job.
Do you work on scooters and mopeds as well as motorcycles?
Yes, and there are a lot of them around here. Scooters, mopeds and motorcycles are all we do, which is why we carry the blanks and programming gear those machines actually use rather than a van built for cars and houses.
