Can a Locksmith Make a Motorcycle Key if I Have Lost All of Them?
Yes. A locksmith can make a new key with no spare present by decoding the ignition barrel, fork lock or seat lock and cutting a fresh blade to match. Where the bike has a factory immobiliser, the transponder chip is then registered to the ECU. Ostan Locksmiths does this at your bike, 7am to 10pm daily.
- No existing key, code card or paperwork from the dealer is required
- Key is originated from the lock itself, then cut and, if needed, programmed
- ID and proof of ownership are checked before any key is cut
- Price is confirmed on the phone before Michael travels to you
Which Lost Key Situation Are You In?
Lost key calls are not all the same job. Find the one below that matches where you are standing right now, because it changes what we ask on the phone and what comes in the kit.
Your Only Key Has Vanished at Home
There was only ever one key, and now it is not on the hook, in the jacket or under the seat. The bike is at home and going nowhere. There is no tow and no trip to a workshop: we come to the driveway, garage or kerb, decode the ignition barrel or whichever lock reads best, and cut a working key beside the bike.
Your Keys Were Stolen
A stolen key is different to a lost one, because someone may know which bike it opens. Report the theft to the police, then call us. We originate a new key from the lock the same way. A key cut to the old code starts the bike, but so does the stolen one, so tell Michael on the phone if you want the barrel changed as well.
Stranded Away From Home
The key went missing at the beach, the pub, a job site or somewhere on a ride, and the bike is sitting in a car park you cannot leave overnight. You do not need a street address to call. The nearest cross street, car park level or shopfront is enough, whether that is Albert Park, St Kilda or Port Melbourne. We work at the bike.
A Bike That Came With No Keys
You bought a project bike, inherited one, or dragged something out of a shed and no key came with it. There is nothing to copy and no owner to ask. We treat it exactly like a lost key job and originate from the lock, but proof the bike is yours matters even more here, so have the transfer papers or receipt ready.
How a Lost Key Job Runs, Start to Finish
Four steps, from your phone call to a key that turns in the ignition.
1. Call Michael With the Bike Details
Call 0410 380 354. Tell us the make, model and year off the registration papers, whether the bike has a factory immobiliser, and exactly where it is parked. We confirm the price on the phone before travelling, and tell you the soonest we can get to you.
2. ID and Ownership Checked
When Michael arrives, he checks your photo ID and proof the bike is yours: registration in your name, a receipt or transfer papers. This happens on every job, before any key is cut. If it does not check out, the job stops there.
3. The Lock Is Decoded and the Key Cut
We read the cuts out of the ignition barrel, fork lock or seat lock, depending on which lock on your bike is the best source. That code is cut into the correct blank on site. The blade is then tested in every lock it should operate.
4. Chip Programmed and Bike Started
If your bike runs a transponder immobiliser, the chip in the new key has to be registered to the ECU before the engine will fire. Where the system allows it, that happens at the bike and we start it in front of you. What is possible varies by make, model and year, confirmed on the phone first.
How a Key Is Made With Nothing to Copy
Copying a key and originating one are different jobs. A copy traces an existing blade. Originating means the key does not exist yet, so the cutting code has to come out of the lock itself. On a motorcycle that usually means the ignition barrel, but the fork lock, seat lock or fuel cap lock can carry the same code and are sometimes easier to reach. We read the wafer or pin positions, build the code, then cut it.
Cutting the blade only solves half of it on a modern bike. If there is a transponder chip in the key, the blade will turn the barrel but the engine will not fire until the chip is registered to the immobiliser and ECU. Honda H.I.S.S., Kawasaki KIPASS, BMW Keyless Ride and Ducati Hands-Free each handle that differently, and Yamaha, Suzuki, KTM and Vespa models fitted with a factory transponder immobiliser follow their own procedures. That is why make, model and year decide the job.
Reading the Code From the Barrel
The ignition barrel holds the pattern the key has to match. Where the bike allows we decode it in place, which avoids unbolting the ignition switch assembly and disturbing its wiring. On some bikes the fork lock or seat lock is the easier source.
Choosing the Right Key Blank
Blanks are not universal. Blade profile, thickness and chip housing change between makes and between model years under one badge, so the make, model and year you give us on the phone decide what comes out with Michael.
Registering the Chip to the ECU
On an immobilised bike the new transponder has to be written into the ECU before it will start. Some procedures expect a working key already present, which a lost-all-keys job does not have, so the method changes and stays dealer-only on a few models.
One Key or Several Locks
Older bikes often share one code across ignition, fork lock, seat and fuel cap. If a barrel has been replaced at some point, those codes can differ, and you may end up with a key that starts the bike but will not open the seat.
Worth knowing: A make being listed does not mean every model and year can be keyed from scratch. Proximity and keyless systems in particular can be dealer-locked, so we confirm what your bike allows on the phone.

What This Service Covers and What It Does Not
The boundaries are firm, and worth knowing before you call.
What this service covers
- New keys originated from the lock when every key is lost or stolen
- Ignition barrel, fork lock, seat lock and fuel cap lock decoding
- Transponder chip programming where the make, model and year allow it
- Motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and trail bikes at your location across Melbourne
- A spare cut at the same visit if you ask, so you are not down to one key again
What we do not do
- Cars, vans, homes, offices and commercial premises, at any time
- Engine, wiring, ignition coil and charging faults, we are locksmiths not mechanics
- Bikes you cannot prove you own, no ID and ownership means no key is cut
- Coding on models where the manufacturer locks the system to dealer equipment
What to Have Ready Before We Arrive
Five minutes of preparation before Michael arrives saves time at the bike. Have this ready, or know the answers when you call.
- Photo ID, plus proof the bike is yours: registration in your name, a receipt or transfer papers
- The make, model and year read off the registration papers or compliance plate, not from memory
- Whether the bike has a factory immobiliser, and whether an immobiliser light shows on the dash
- Anything key related that survived: a key tag, a code card, or a snapped blade from an old key
- The exact spot the bike is standing: street number, car park level, or the nearest cross street
- Room to work beside the bike, with any cover, chain or disc lock taken off if you are able to
Have this ready: No registration papers? Say so when you call. A receipt, transfer papers or an insurance document in your name can work instead, but with no proof of ownership at all, no key gets cut.
Makes We Originate Lost Keys For
These are the makes we work on for lost key jobs. With no key present, what is possible depends on the immobiliser generation, so the year matters as much as the badge on the tank.

Lost Motorcycle Keys FAQs
I've lost every key to my bike. Can you still make one?
Yes. With no key at all, we originate one from the lock rather than copying, reading the cutting code straight out of the ignition barrel, fork lock or seat lock. No spare, code card or dealer paperwork is needed. If the bike has an immobiliser, the chip is then programmed. What is possible depends on the make, model and year, which we confirm on the phone.
Can a locksmith make a motorcycle key, or do I have to go to the dealer?
A locksmith can do it on a great many bikes, so the dealership is not automatically the answer. We originate the blade from your own lock and, where the system allows, register the chip beside the bike, instead of the bike having to get to a dealer at all. Some model years are held to dealer equipment, and Michael tells you that on the phone rather than after travelling.
How do you prove the bike is actually mine before cutting a key?
We ask for photo ID plus proof of ownership on every job, with no exceptions. Registration in your name is the cleanest, and a receipt, transfer papers or an insurance document also work. Michael checks it before any key is cut, not after. If the names and details do not line up, the job stops and no key gets made.
My keys were stolen. Should I change the locks as well as get a new key?
Often yes, and it depends how exposed the bike is. A new key cut to the old code will start the bike, but the stolen key still works too. If that worries you, we can look at replacing the ignition barrel or lock set so the old key is dead. Report the theft to the police first, then call and describe the bike and where it is.
What does a new motorcycle key cost when every key is gone?
There is no flat figure, because the work is not the same on every bike. What moves it is whether the key is a plain cut blade or carries a transponder chip, which lock has to be decoded, whether a barrel has to come apart to be read, and where the bike is standing. Michael confirms the price with you on the phone before anyone travels. Call 0410 380 354 with the make, model and year.
How long does it take to make a new motorcycle key?
We do not put a time on it, because your bike decides. A plain mechanical key decoded from a seat lock sits at the short end. A transponder key with no working key left, a barrel that has to come out before it can be read, or an immobiliser that has to be reached through the diagnostic port all take considerably longer. Tell Michael the make, model and year and he will explain what yours is likely to involve.
