The bike is behind an electric gate and the remote went with the keys. Can you help?
We can do the bike, but not the gate. Ostan Locksmiths works on motorcycles, scooters and mopeds only, so a gate remote or a house lock is outside what we touch. What you need is a way for us to get onto the property, whether that is someone home to open it or a neighbour with the code. Once we are in, the bike work is normal.
My Ducati uses the hands-free system. What can actually be done if I lose it?
It depends which part is lost. Ducati’s hands-free setup is a proximity system, with a fob that the bike recognises and a separate mechanical emergency blade for the physical locks. Replacing the blade and replacing or pairing a fob are different jobs with different requirements, and some are dealer territory. Give us the model and year and we will tell you plainly which side of that line yours falls on.
The bike has not run in two years and the ignition will not turn. Is it seized?
Often it is just dry and full of dust rather than genuinely seized, especially in a closed garage. We take the barrel apart on site, clean and lubricate the wafers, and test it with a freshly cut key. If a wafer has actually broken or the cam has worn past use, we will say so and fit a replacement barrel coded to work with your existing locks.
Do you need paperwork before cutting a key?
Always. Before anything is cut we check the registration papers for the bike and photo identification in the same name. If the machine is registered to a company or a family member, we need something that connects you to it. It is a short check and it is the reason a stranger cannot have a key made for your bike while it sits in your driveway.
Do you come out to Toorak for a single spare key?
Yes, and it is a sensible thing to organise. A spare cut and coded while the original still works is a far simpler job than a lost-key callout later, and it can be done in your garage in one visit.
