Is it safe to leave the bike on Chapel Street overnight while I sort a key?
We would rather you did not have to. If you call inside our hours we come out to it that evening where we can, and the bike goes home with you. If the loss happens after 10pm the phone is not answered, so the practical move is to make sure the bike is locked, the steering lock is on and it is in a well-lit legal bay, then ring us from seven.
Can you make a key for a BMW with Keyless Ride?
Sometimes, and it depends what has been lost. Keyless Ride is a proximity system: the fob talks to the bike, and there is a separate mechanical emergency blade for the steering and seat locks. Losing the blade is a different task from losing the fob, and not every situation is solvable at the kerb. Tell us the model, the year and exactly what is missing and we will be honest about it.
The building manager is away. Can you still get to my basement bike?
Only if somebody with access can meet us. We have no way of opening a residential boom gate or a secure car park door, and we would not try. A neighbour, a partner, the concierge or the on-call caretaker are all fine. Once we are through the door the rest is normal work, and the bike does not need to be moved out of its bay.
How long does a spare key usually take once you are there?
For a straightforward cut and code, the work beside the bike is short, though we never quote a fixed arrival window because South Yarra traffic decides that, not us. What we will tell you on the phone is where Michael is coming from and a realistic sense of the day. Older bikes with no immobiliser are quicker still, since there is no chip to program.
Do you work on cars parked in the same building?
No. Ostan Locksmiths is motorcycles, scooters and mopeds only, and that is not a soft limit. We do not carry car equipment, we do not do house or shop locks, and we will tell you plainly if a job is outside what we do rather than turning up and improvising. Everything we own is set up for two wheels, which is why the bike work goes cleanly.
