Do you come to Swinburne and the student streets around it?
Yes, that is a regular run for us. Scooters parked on the racks and side streets around the campus lose keys constantly, and the fix is the same as anywhere else: we come to the scooter, read the lock, cut a key and program the chip if there is one. You do not need to move it or find somewhere to leave it, and we confirm a price on the phone first.
The bike is in a basement on Burwood Road with no fob. Can you still get in?
We can work down there, but somebody has to let us through the door. Building managers, a neighbour or the concierge are all fine. Ring ahead, arrange entry for a rough time, then call us and we will match that window. Once we are beside the bike the basement makes no difference to the job; the equipment is portable and runs off its own power.
What proof do you need that the bike is mine?
Photo identification and the bike’s registration papers in the same name are the usual pair. If the bike is registered to a parent, a partner or a company, we can work with that as long as the registered owner can confirm it, by phone if they cannot be there. This is standard practice with any motorcycle locksmith, and it takes hardly any time; we would want the same care taken with our own bikes.
My Kawasaki has KIPASS. Does that change anything?
It changes what we are working with. KIPASS is a proximity fob system rather than a cut transponder key, and the fob holds a separate mechanical emergency blade that operates the steering lock and seat. We can cut that blade at the bike so it can be unlocked and moved. What can be done with the fob itself depends on the model and year, so tell us both and we will explain the options before anyone commits.
Is there anywhere I can meet you instead, to save time?
No, and there is nothing to gain by trying. We have no premises, so there is no counter to visit and nothing to hand over anywhere; the van comes to the bike and the whole job happens there. That is the point of a mobile service. Give us the address, or the nearest corner if the bike is not outside a house, and we will come to it.
